Week 3- Learning Tools- 1 Hour

For your field experience this week, observe students using learning tools. These tools do NOT need to be only technology tools. They can be any tool that aids in the learning process. Explain what learning tools you see in action and justify why these tools are learning tools.

I saw many learning tools this week in the classroom. I watched students using manipulatives in math. They were using pattern blocks. They first used these block to name each attribute of each shape. They then used the block to talk about the size of blocks, and how other blocks could be used to cover a bigger shape and how many of the blocks it would take to cover the shape. The students were learning about equal parts, and the blocks provided a nice visual for the students, and a way to make meaning of dividing a shape into equal parts.

I also saw the students complete a lesson worksheet in math. I feel this is a learning tool because it gives the students a way to show what they have learned, and the teacher a chance to make sure the students met the learning goals.

They were also given homework. This learning tool is a great formative assessment for the teacher.

I also saw iPads being used for students to work on math facts. They needed to compete with the time in a fun game. I feel this is a great learning tool because the students are working on math facts during math, and it is a fun engaging way to help students learn facts easily and quickly

During math I also saw the use of manipulatives such as base 10 blocks and a big analog clock. These were used during a morning meeting the students have each day where they go over concepts they have been learning or struggling with. I think using these visuals are one more way to make sure all learners are supported and master content. During this time, students also sang a song about counting by 10’s, but starting at different numbers like 4, or 7. This catchy tune is another way to support all learners, and can be using when completing homework or even a test (if the students can memorize the song).
