Week Two- ISTE Standards- 1 Hour
I watched a lesson in science on the human body. The teacher had created a power point presentation for the students to view, as well as used a link to a digital video from Epic books that taught about shots and their importance. The focus of the power point was Edward Jenner (the creator of vaccines).
1. What standards did you observe? How did the teacher meet this standard?
The ISTE standards that I observed were:
Facilitator: 6b- manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital platforms, virtual environments, hands-on makerspaces or in the field.
I saw the teacher meet this standard by creating a lesson that incorporated technology and then implemented it in a way that engaged that met the needs of the students and the digital devices they were using. The teacher used the power point to create an engaging presentation that informed students about Edward Jenner. She then used the video at Epic books to show students a video on shots, and why they are important, as well as one on what would happen if we did not have shots. This led to a discussion on what could happen if we did not get shots, and finally of the students working together to create a pro vs. cons list of getting shots/or not getting shots.
Knowledge constructor: 3d- students build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and theories and pursing answers and solutions.
I saw this through the presentation and videos the students viewed, as well as them collaborating on what they had learned from the presentation, videos, and discussions.
2. Was the lesson effective? How do you know?
I do feel this lesson was effective. Students were engaged during the presentations and videos, there was great discussion occurring, students learned new ideas from the information presented, and showed this and expanded on it, using critical thinking skills when they were working together to create pro vs. con charts. The teacher told the students that by the end of the lesson, they would be able to tell why it is important to get a shot, and what a disease is. By the end of the lesson, I saw this. So, I feel the objectives had been met.
3. What were the students doing in the lesson? Were the students engaged, thinking critically, collaborating, and communicating?
The students were engaged in the presentation and videos. They collaborated in groups while making the pro vs. cons charts and it required them to take their knowledge and the new information they learned that day to fill them out. I saw ideas such as; stay healthy, not get others sick, shots hurt, you could still get sick, being sick is yucky, you couldn’t go to school, etc. They came back together as a group to share their ideas and create one big chart, so during this whole process I saw great communication. I also think this required them to think critically as they had to really think about ways a shot could be a con.
4. Were there any changes you would make to the lesson? Explain.
If I wanted to incorporate more technology into this lesson, I may have had students create their charts using a digital tool, but I do think the group setting allowed for more communication that might have been hindered by technology. I really though this lesson was a well thought out lesson. The students seemed fascinated by Edward Jenner’s story, and exactly what small pox is, and how he made a way to make people better. There were a few images of people’s arms that showed small pox that were pretty graphic, but the teacher did give a warning, and the students handled it well.
5. What learning model do you think the teacher was using in his/her classroom?
The learning model I think the teacher was using in the classroom was Inquiry based learning. The teacher started the lesson off by asking students questions about shots and why we need them. Then, she showed the presentation and videos (giving students descriptions), they also communicated what they learned in their group settings and applied that new knowledge when writing their thoughts on the pros and cons of getting shots.
